BARCELONA - Mobile phone users are tantalizingly close to the day when they can power up any phone with the same charger.

But industry players gathered at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona still have some way to go.

Three years ago, 17 manufacturers and operators agreed at this same conference to share the same standard for mobile phone chargers fitting into a micro-USB socket.

The relatively modest goal, defined by the global industry's GSM Association, was that most mobile phones sold in 2012 should be compatible with the new universal charger.

Despite European Union pressure on the industry to ensure all phones share the same type of charger and thus avoid hassle for users and vast amounts of unnecessary waste, results have been mixed.

"It has been announced so many times and the customers are still waiting for it," sighed Flavio Cuchietti, one of the project's supervisors at the UN agency, the International Telecommunication Union.

"It has been clearly aimed at smartphones, which account for about 25-30 per cent of the market in Europe. Then what about the other 70 per cent, and what about the Third World?" he asked.

The ITU in 2011 asked all manufacturers to share the same mobile phone charger by 2014.

Last year, a study by the University of Genoa researchers found 10 different charger models among the eight major market players.

"Our intention is not to punish an industry or to block their development. Our intention is to find a solution that is viable, adding extra complexity and extra cost, but in the end we get to a universal solution," Cuchietti said.

The result is also less waste, he said, estimating that more than 100,000 tonnes of chargers were discarded every year by consumers when they bought new phones.

But despite uneven progress, manufacturers say they are optimistic.

Samsung and Sony Mobile say all their models now use the universal micro-USB charger while Nokia estimates that about 70 per cent of mobiles sold in the second half of 2011 were compatible with the new standard.

ITU secretary general Hamadoun Touri said the universal charger provided practical benefits for the customer. For example, people who forget their chargers when travelling would easily find a spare.

"I would like to see this technology extended across the world so that when you buy a new telephone that charger is just an option," Touri said.

But that would require manufacturers to take another bold step.

"Consumer expectation is to have a charger included with the sales package," said Peter Harrison, in charge of regulatory standards at the Finnish phone maker Nokia.

"We are now in a transition period," he said.

Bertrand Villie, in charge of sustainable development at Sony Mobile France, said manufacturers were reluctant to stop selling the charger along with the phone unless everyone agreed to do so at the same time.

"We cannot decide on our own to sell our products without a charger; if we did that no-one would buy Sony Mobile!" he said. "Even so, the mobile phone industry is the only one in the world that has agreed on a universal charger."

New, faster Apple iPad 3 expected March 7

Apple Inc is hosting a media event next Wednesday, where it is expected to unveil a faster, better-equipped version of its popular iPad tablet to thwart increasing competition from deep-pocketed rivals such as Amazon.com Inc.

The invitation-only event will be held at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) on March 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where it also introduced the last two generations of iPads.

Apple, which sent the invitation to reporters by email on Tuesday, did not divulge details of the event beyond saying: "We have something you really have to see. And touch."

The invitation featured a partial picture of the touchscreen of a device resembling an iPad.

Apple launches are some of the hottest events on the tech calendar, scrutinized by fans, investors, the media and industry insiders alike.

The iPad has dominated the nascent tablet computer market, but Amazon's Kindle Fire, which sells at half the cost, has chipped away at the lower end of the market.

The third iteration of a device that has helped put pressure on demand for traditional laptops and computers is expected to boast a faster, quad-core processor, and a higher-definition screen.

Some analysts and industry experts expect 4G wireless capability, ensuring that the iPad remains current as cutting-edge broadband technology from Verizon Wireless and other carriers gains momentum. Verizon Wireless is a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc.

"The picture is zoomed in on an icon and I don't see any pixels in that icon," Avi Greengart, analyst at Current Analysis, said, underscoring how industry experts pick apart even Apple's communiques for hints of what to expect.

"You don't need exceptional foresight to guess that Apple is likely looking at a higher resolution display."

Taking on PCs

The company's market value has climbed steadily in past weeks, buoyed by anticipation over its latest gadget as well as by hopes that Apple will finally accede to shareholders' demands that it return some of its $98 billion war chest of cash and securities.

On Tuesday, Apple shares racked up a record high of $534.62 in heavy trading on the Nasdaq market before easing slightly to $532.70, up 1.3 percent on the day.

Apple iPad tablet sales doubled in the December quarter to 15.43 million units. The company has sold about 55 million iPads since it introduced the device in 2010.

It may be looking to "make further inroads into the general computing market" with the newest iPad, Greengart said.

Chief Executive Tim Cook has often said that he expects tablets to outsell personal computers eventually. Cook, who took the company's helm after visionary Steve Jobs died in October, will likely lead the event, with ample help from marketing chief Phil Schiller and other executives.

With the iPad 2 starting at $499, investors will also be watching to see if Apple plans to discount it, creeping farther down the price chain and closer to the Fire, to broaden the iPad's appeal.

Microsoft launched Windows 8

IT giant Microsoft launched Wednesday the test version of a new generation of Windows operating system, which is designed to run seamlessly on computers and rapidly-growing tablets.

"Windows 8 is a generational change in the Windows operating system," said Windows president Steven Sinofsky.

"It's Windows reimagined," he added, on the sidelines of the world's biggest mobile fair in Barcelona.

That Microsoft had picked the Mobile World Congress to hold its consumer launch was not coincidental, as the operating system is meant to be its answer to Google's Android platform and Apple, which has dominated a market it ignited with the release of the iPad.

Like its two competitors, Microsoft is going big on the app concept.

Unlike previous generations of Windows, which has a taskbar pulling up a list of software, the latest version is applications-based, with a selection of apps tiled on the startpage.

And the gestures controlling how one selects or moves apps around are those currently common on smartphones -- swipes or taps on screens.

"Apps bring to life the operating system. The more apps you have, the better your experience," said Sinofsky.

Solid debut for Amazon's Kindle Fire

WASHINGTON - Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which went on sale in November, had a solid debut, leapfrogging Samsung tablets to become the top-selling device after Apple’s iPad, a market research firm said Thursday.

The Seattle-based Amazon shipped 3.9 million Kindle Fires in the fourth quarter to grab 14.3 percent of the global tablet market, IHS iSuppli said.

The Cupertino, California-based Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads during the last three months of the year and saw its share of the tablet market fall to 57 percent from 64 percent a year earlier, it said.

Samsung shipped 2.1 million tablets during the quarter for an eight-percent market share, down from 11 percent a year earlier, IHS iSuppli said.

Samsung offers a variety of tablets powered by Google’s Android software.

The Kindle Fire costs $199, less than half the price of the cheapest iPad.

It has a seven-inch (17.78-centimeter) screen, smaller than the iPad’s 9.7 inches (24.6 centimeters), connects to the Web using Wi-Fi and is powered by Android.

According to IHS iSuppli, the toughest competitor for the iPad in the fourth quarter was not the Kindle Fire and other tablets but Apple’s own newly introduced smartphone, the iPhone 4S.

"The rollout of the iPhone 4S in October generated intense competition for Apple purchasers’ disposable income, doing more to limit iPad shipment growth than competition from the Kindle Fire and other media tablets," said Rhoda Alexander, senior manager for tablet and monitor research for IHS.

Alexander said the Kindle Fire had a "respectable start."

But its long-term viability "will hinge on the success of Amazon’s business gamble, which depends on tablet sales driving substantial new online merchandise sales at Amazon.com in order to attain profitability," she said.

Apple brings iPad features to the Mac

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple released a preview version of its new Macintosh operating system on Thursday, bringing some features of the iPad to the personal computer.

The Cupertino, California-based company said the updated operating system, called Mountain Lion, will be available to Macintosh developers immediately and Mac owners can upgrade to the new software in late summer.

Apple said Mountain Lion includes a new Messages application which replaces iChat and allows a user to send unlimited messages, photos and video from a Mac to another Mac or a device running iOS software such as the iPad or iPhone.

It also includes integration with Twitter allowing users to sign in and tweet directly from Safari, Photo Booth and third-party applications.

Game Center allows for live multiplayer games to be played across iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch devices while with AirPlay Mirroring, a Mac user can wirelessly send video from a Mac to an HDTV using Apple TV.

Mountain Lion is the first Mac operating system built with the Internet "cloud" in mind, Apple said.

"More than 100 million users have iCloud accounts, and Mountain Lion makes it easier than ever to set up iCloud and access documents across your devices," it said.

Mountain Lion entices users into iCloud, which Apple chief executive Tim Cook this week described as one of the "profound changes" people will one day talk about with their grandchildren.

"If you dial back 10 to 12 years, Steve (Jobs) announced a strategy for Apple that positions the Mac or PC at the hub of everyone’s life," Cook said Tuesday at a Goldman Sachs technology conference in San Francisco.

"iCloud turns that on its head," he said. "It recognizes that, across that decade, you and I live off multiple devices."

A new security feature called Gatekeeper protects Macs against malicious software by giving users control over what applications can be installed and downloaded, Apple said.

Cook, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, said the new Macintosh operating system takes advantage of features popular on the iPad and iPhone.

"We see that people are in love with a lot of apps and functionality here," Cook said of the iPhone. "Anywhere where that makes sense, we are going to move that over to Mac."

Apple sold a record 5.2 million Macs last quarter.

In a nod to the booming China market, Mountain Lion boasts features tailored for Chinese users, giving them the option of using Baidu search in the Safari browser or uploading video directly to China websites Youku or Tudou.

Sales of Macintosh computers in China more than doubled last year, Cook said. "Not on a big base, but 100 percent is still good," he said. "China is a big focus for us."

Macintosh computers have benefited from a "halo effect" that started with the success of culture-changing iPod players introduced in 2001 and which has continued with iPhones and iPads, according to Cook.

"The world changed for us in many ways when the iPhone launched," Cook said, explaining that the hit smartphones brought the California company to the attention of millions of people around the world who "had never met Apple."

"You can definitely see a synergistic effect of these products," he said.

The iPad is eating into desktop computer sales in what late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs branded the "post-PC era" but is taking a bigger bite out of sales of machines powered by Microsoft’s Windows software, according to Cook.

"I do believe the iPad is cannibalizing some Mac, but it is cannibalizing more Windows PC," Cook said at the conference.

"The way we see cannibalization is we prefer to do it rather than have somebody else do it," he said. "It doesn’t mean the PC is going to die; I think the Mac can still grow."

iPad 3 expected in March

Apple Inc plans to introduce its latest iPad tablet at an event in the first week in March, the website AllThingsD reported, citing unnamed sources.

The event will be held in San Francisco, likely at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which is Apple's preferred site for product launches, the website said.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple has typically introduced the latest versions of its iPad in the first few months of the year. The current iPad 2 was introduced on March 2, 2011. The original iPad was introduced at the end of January 2010.

Apple's iPad dominates the nascent market for tablets even though deep-pocketed rivals are taking aim at the lucrative segment. Amazon.com Inc's Kindle Fire, which sells at half the cost of an iPad, has chipped away at the lower end of the tablet market.

Apple iPad tablet sales doubled in the December quarter to 15.43 million units from a year earlier.

Facebook may re-enter China

When it comes to China, Facebook should consider itself forewarned. Cracking the world's biggest Internet population might seem an obvious ambition for the social networking giant as it trumpets its global growth before a $5 billion initial public offering, but the chances it will succeed look slim.

Facebook said last week it was contemplating re-entering China, the world's second-biggest economy, after being blocked nearly three years ago.

But its offering would likely face intense competition, political meddling and little commercial success.

Few foreign Internet companies have succeeded in China. EBay Inc, Google Inc, Amazon.com Inc, Yahoo Inc and most recently Groupon Inc form the list of notable online players who have failed to gain traction in the fast-growing nation of 1.3 billion people.

"It's actually a bit late for Facebook," said Hong Kong-based CLSA analyst Elinor Leung, who added that the market was already quite saturated with local players such as Sina Corp, Renren Inc, Kaixinwang001 and Tencent Holdings.

Facebook first launched its Chinese interface in 2008 but was blocked by Beijing in mid-2009 following deadly riots in the western province of Xinjiang that authorities say were abetted by the social networking site.

"It will be very difficult for Facebook to introduce something that will allow them to differentiate themselves," CLSA's Leung said.

Almost half of China's 500 million Internet users use social networking sites, government data showed in January.

The dominant players among China's social networking sites (SNS) are Renren and Sina Corp, which is attempting to turn its highly popular microblogging service, Weibo, into a full-fledged social network.

Will China "like" Facebook?

Domestic sites have flourished into self-contained ecosystems with their own suite of apps, news portals, micro-currencies and e-commerce options, making it hard for Facebook, if it gained entry, to compete, industry players say.

"China's SNS space is more crowded and competitive than the U.S. with multiple large and established players all investing for long-term growth," said Joe Chen, chief executive of Renren, which would become a direct competitor with Facebook should the U.S. giant enter the market.

"Facebook will enter a much more competitive market with a significantly different culture, business environment and other characteristics than what it has previously experienced in the global market," Chen added.

Analysts agreed.

"The Chinese have been social for years, and Facebook would be just one more option among many," said Sam Flemming, founder of Shanghai-based social media consultancy, CIC.

"It certainly would have a certain amount of cache, especially among the more internationalized Chinese and foreigners living in China, but it would need a big push in awareness beyond this small group," Flemming said.

Foreigners and Chinese citizens who want to access Facebook and other blocked sites must use special VPN software to get around China's firewall to do so, meaning a very limited number of Chinese currently use it.

China relationship: It's complicated

Facebook would face the same factors that have led to the failure of many foreign Internet companies in China: nimble local competition, murky government regulation and bureaucracy, and difficulty in adapting to local tastes.

Complying with Beijing's regulations can also carry a cost in Facebook's established Western markets -- companies such as Google and Cisco Systems Inc have faced criticism at home over accusations of cooperating with the Chinese authorities' efforts to control online content.

Google, considered the most successful foreign Internet company to make a foray into China, managed to secure only 30 percent of the Chinese search market before pulling out in early 2010, after a serious hacking episode and a reluctance to censor further in China.

It still maintains a presence in the country through a site hosted in Hong Kong.

"The way for Facebook to be in China would be for them to build or buy a local team and allow them to craft a product to suit the local market over the long run. Then they may have a decent chance to compete, not guaranteeing that they will win," said Dominic Penaloza, chief executive of Chinese professional social-networking site, Ushi.cn.

Penaloza said many foreign Internet firms had failed in China because they were unwilling to give such autonomy to their local partners.

Early last year, Facebook was reportedly in exploratory talks with potential Chinese partners. Analysts said Facebook would have to manage and censor content heavily in order to gain Beijing's blessing for entry.

Twitter and YouTube are also blocked in China, while domestic social networks have to heavily censor and weed out content that Beijing deems undesirable.

Facebook said in its IPO prospectus that the firm was evaluating entering China, but notes that the market has "substantial legal and regulatory complexities."

A walled-off Facebook, or a heavily censored Facebook for China, may not be appealing to users as Facebook's selling point is its sprawling international reach and open nature.

"Chinese consumers don't ever want to have some second class offering or some dumbed-down offering," said Duncan Clark, chairman of Beijing-based consultancy BDA China.

Evil Shadow Team hacks Microsoft India

Microsoft said on Monday it was investigating an attack by hackers on its Indian retail website, reportedly carried out by a Chinese group called the "Evil Shadow Team."

The team struck at www.microsoftstore.co.in late Sunday, stealing login IDs and passwords of people who had used the website for buying Microsoft products, the Times of India newspaper said.

After hacking the site, the Evil Shadow Team posted a message saying that the "unsafe system will be baptized," the Times of India said.

The Microsoft site was running a message Monday saying that the "Microsoft Store India is currently unavailable" and that the world's largest software company was working "to restore access as quickly as possible."

A spokesman for the group said that Microsoft was "investigating a limited compromise of the company's online store in India," without elaborating.

"The store customers have already been sent guidance on the issue and suggested immediate actions," the spokesman said, adding that Microsoft was "diligently working to remedy the issue and keep our customers protected."

Two years ago, cyber-attackers identifying themselves as the "Pakistan Cyber Army" hacked the website of India's top police agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Indian IT specialists have long lamented what they say is a lack of awareness about Internet security across the country.

Symbian Belle update for NOKIA now available for N8, C7, E6, X7 and C6-01

Nokia has announced that its latest update to the Symbian operating system. That means that owners of an N8, E7, E6, C7 and several others.

According to Nokia, the following handsets are now available for the update in the India, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Poland, UK, Germany, Italy, Vietnam and Indonesia,Philippines.

Updating your Nokia smartphone is pretty simple and straightforward. Just make sure you have the Nokia PC Suite 3.3 (or higher) to activate the software update.

1. Download the latest Nokia Ovi Suite 3.3.86. (Click here to download)

2. After downloading the Nokia Suite, install the Nokia Ovi Suite 3.3.86 then connect your Nokia phone via USB.

Microsoft has offering the latest smartphone Lumia 800 in the U.S., the device in a special bundle device, a Nokia Play 360 wireless speaker, a Purity HD Stereo headset and an in-ear Bluetooth headset.

The device will not come with any carrier support and will initially be aimed at February 14. The recently announced white edition of Lumia 800 would also be stocked soon, the report added.

The Onkyo GX-W100HV speaker will be launched this comming February 18th, 2012, if you are looking a pair of speakers then the Onkyo GX-W100HV will sport DLNA support on top of everything else.

The Onkyo GX-W100HV speaker uses 802.11 b/g/n WiFi with WiFi Protected Setup (WPS) to connect to your wireless router. When the speakers are connected to your router, gadgets and devices that are DLNA capable should be able to find the speakers and connect to them.

The speaker consists of a 12cm A-OMF woofer and a 3cm tweeter, producing 15 Watts per channel. Other specs include optical and analog inputs.

The speakers are expected to go on sale in Japan come 18th of February for 40,000 Yen (~$520), although no word from Onkyo if they have plans to bring the GX-W100HV into international markets.

LG unveiled LTE-capable Optimus Pad Tablet

LG Electronics has unveiled its first LTE-capable tablet, the Optimus Pad LTE. As its name suggests, the tablet supports the LTE technology, an 8.9-inch True HD IPS display with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and an 8-megapixel camera with an HD video recording capability.

Google and Facebook censor Indian web

Online giants Google and Facebook said Monday they had removed allegedly offensive content on their Indian sites as part of a court case seen as a test for Internet control and censorship.

They have been named alongside another 19 Internet firms in private criminal and civil cases being heard in a New Delhi court which will determine whether they can be held responsible for obscene material generated online by users.

In submissions to court Google and Facebook said they had removed the content submitted as part of evidence against them, which is believed to involve obscene images of religious figures and senior Indian politicians.

"This step is in accordance with Google's policy of responding to court orders," Paroma Roy Chowdhury, Google's spokeswoman in India, told AFP.

The groups, including Yahoo! and Microsoft, have appealed to the Delhi High Court asking for the case to be quashed on the basis that they cannot be held responsible for the actions of users of their platforms.

A judge hearing the case in the High Court warned last month that unless the groups cooperated and take steps to eliminate "offensive and objectionable" content they could be blocked "like in China".

Communications Minister Kapil Sibal in December pledged a crackdown on "unacceptable" online content, saying Internet service providers had ignored India's demands to screen images and data before they were uploaded.

Sibal's demands -- reportedly that social networks pre-screen billions of photos, comments and videos posted online -- provoked anger and derision among Indian Internet users.

Experts argued that such demands could not be enforced and smacked of state censorship.

Canon has announced a new All-in-One printer called Canon Pixma MG4150 that is web-enabled. The Canon Pixma MG4150 adopts the FINE print head technology that enables the printer to offer a minimum 2pl droplet size and a maximum 4800dpi print resolution.

Capable of printing a 10x15cm borderless photo in approximately 44 seconds, the MG4150 can also notch up ISO speeds of 99lpm for mono documents and 5.7lpm for colour. FINE print head technology gives up to 4800dpi resolution with a minimum 2pl droplet size.

The Canon Pixma MG4150 will be launched in March 2012 for £119 ($188).

RIM: Is this the BlackBerry 10?

With Research In Motion Ltd. under the gun to deliver its new BlackBerry 10 operating system before the end of 2012, one of the most common questions swirling around Canada's embattled tech icon is: What will the first BlackBerry 10 smartphones look like?

If recent photos circulated online are any indication, RIM's next-generation BlackBerry smartphones may look a bit like the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

On Monday, the BlackBerry news site Crackberry.com posted photos of what it says could be RIM's first BB 10 smartphone, the BlackBerry London, a device that clearly looks like a "phonified" version of RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Crackberry reports the London is expected to be designed for the United Kingdom smartphone market.

Because RIM's new BB 10 smartphone operating system will be based on the same QNX technology that powers the PlayBook, it wouldn't be surprising if the next generation of mobile phones coming out of Waterloo, Ont., look more like slimmed-down tablets than traditional BlackBerrys.

The first of RIM's next evolution of smartphones are expected to launch in the second half of this year. According to a leaked RIM product road map posted to the Boy Genius Report blog, the first BlackBerry 10 device based off the QNX platform is scheduled to be released in September.

RIM has not commented publicly on its timetable to deliver BlackBerry 10 devices to market, except to say the first devices are expected to launch in the second half of this year.

Shares of RIM spiked last week - after tumbling in the wake of Thorsten Heins' appointment to the chief executive chair - when news began to spread that BlackBerry 10 could arrive as soon as September.

Of course, these aren't the first photos of a device purporting to be RIM's next evolution of the BlackBerry. In November, tech website The Verge posted photos of a different device that also went by the name of the BlackBerry London.

Don't expect RIM to shed any light on these devices prematurely. The company's policy is to decline comment on rumours and speculation.
